Assessments around May half-term in listening, reading, speaking and writing based on topics covered in Year 7

Pupils are taught in their tutor group from September to the Christmas holidays. Based on the Winter assessments, classwork, homework and the teacher assessment, pupils are then regrouped. There will be 4 teaching groups in each year half (X and Y). The groups are reviewed regularly based on pupils’ classwork and homework, assessment results and teacher assessment.

Homework Information

There is no homework timetable in Spanish. Pupils are set a variety of homework activities as and when it is deemed appropriate and relevant by the class teacher. Some weeks short, consolidation tasks are set such as reading comprehensions or grammar activities. These may be expected to be completed from one lesson to the next. Pupils are usually given one week for vocabulary learning and written homework. For most pupils this will average half an hour per week.

Extended Study Information

There are many online resources which your child can access to improve further their Spanish. The advantage of these is that they offer immediate feedback to the learner. The main websites that pupils will be familiar with are and Class teachers will provide pupils with login information.

Pupils are also encouraged to revise vocabulary that they have met on a regular basis to make sure it stays in their long-term memory. They can also research further vocabulary on the topics met in class and vocabulary in areas of their own, personal interests.

A pencil, rubber, ruler, glue, a green pen and a couple of blue or black writing pens are always essential in every Spanish lesson. Pupils should also make sure they bring their vocabulary/grammar booklet to every class. Pupils may find that their own set of highlighters may be useful, but these are not compulsory. There are dictionaries in each classroom but their own dictionary may be useful as well.

Visits / Extra-Curricular opportunities

There will be a trip to the town of Zaragoza in the north-east of Spain in May. Pupils stay in a hotel and do day trips as well as meet and work with Spanish secondary school pupils in the local school.

Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in Spanish club and Spelling Bee club, both of which run at lunchtimes.
