Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

20th August 2020

Post-16 Guidance can be found here

After six fraught months of uncertainty and not least, the recent controversies over GCSE gradings, it’s a great pleasure to be able to congratulate our Year 11 students on an excellent set of GCSE results.   Secondary schools across Cambridgeshire have agreed not to publish headline results in the local media, and there will be no national publication of exam data since the results for 2020 are based on schools’ internal assessments, but we’re delighted with the final outcomes for most of our students. It is a huge relief that these results are now based on the school’s own Centre Assessment Grades, with the impact of the dreaded Ofqual algorithm eventually being only to raise a very few grades.

We are still awaiting confirmation of the BTEC and Engineering results:  the grades that had been sent to school were withdrawn late last night so that the exam board could check these are on a par with the ‘significantly higher’ Centre Assessment Grades now awarded for GCSEs. Since the grades received already looked pleasing, this sounds like a positive move and we’ll send the revised grades to students as soon as we receive them, next week.

Awarding the Centre Assessment Grades has been a difficult and worrying process for the staff. However, it was done with integrity and we are confident that the process at CamVC was as fair and rigorous as it could possibly have been.  Ultimately, as frequently stated by the Government, its aim was to ensure that all students are able to progress on to meaningful courses Post 16, unaffected by the impact of the pandemic.  I’m delighted that the vast majority of students have attained the grades needed for their chosen progression and as on every results day, staff will now be working with anyone who did not get the outcomes they had been hoping for, so that they can still progress to a pleasing choice of course.

Most importantly, the fact that no exams were sat should not prevent the students from taking huge pride in their achievements.  The class of 2020 has worked hard and well for the past five years; their fine results are well deserved, and they should be celebrating their achievements today.  Please do send your photos with captions to dpayne@cambournevc.org so that we can all share those ‘jumping for joy’ moments – and we look forward to seeing you all for a proper celebration at some point in the next year.

With very best wishes to you all,

Claire Coates
