Pupils may now use Webcams in Live Lessons

As we continue to review and improve our remote learning provision, it has become apparent that allowing pupils to have their webcams on during live lessons would benefit both the pupils participating in the lesson and the member of staff delivering it. Feedback from other schools and recommendations from Ofsted would back this up.

From Monday, pupils may be invited to switch on their cameras during a live lesson. This will still be at the discretion of the teacher, and pupils are not obliged to switch their camera on. Pupils may also be invited to share their screen content with the group. Staff will still retain in full control of pupils’ participation in lessons.

In order to use their cameras, pupils must ensure:

  • They are dressed appropriately
  • They are in an appropriate space for the meeting, and aware of anything, or anyone, in their background. (It is good practice to blur the background)
  • Any interruptions are avoided as much as possible
  • When attending a live session, pupils must still join with their video and audio turned off

Once the session has started, if the member of staff leading the lesson feels it is appropriate, pupils may be invited to turn their camera on. We feel that the ability to see each other will not only have a positive impact on interactions throughout lessons, but also be welcome during this period of lockdown.

Year 11 Webcams

Please would parents of Year 11 students let us know if they do not have a working camera and microphone for accessing live lessons, and we will try to help. We may be able to extend this offer to other year groups in the future.

Year 10 Collaborative Research Project with University of Cambridge

The College is working with a researcher from the University to look at the impact of lockdown and home learning on pupil wellbeing and attainment. Year 10 parents have received a letter about this on School Post. Please do consider giving your consent for your child to take part; the knowledge gained will be shared with the school and is potentially very valuable in helping us to shape future provision.

School is closed next Tuesday for staff curriculum planning.  We have received no requests from parents for Critical Worker school to remain open so this will not run on this day.

With many thanks for your continued support for your children’s learning – we do appreciate how hard this can be.

With all good wishes and take care,

Claire Coates
